INFORMATION FOR FLOOD VICTIMS :::

INFECTION CONTROL      The Indoor Air Quality Association     The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

The dangers are not over just because the water may have receded.  Flood hazards such as exposed wires, contaminated floodwater, black mold, or structural deterioration are not always obvious but can be life-threatening.  We urge people to be very careful.

HAVE YOU BEEN EXPOSED TO

"TOXIC" MOLD, BLACK MOLD, FUNGUS,  MYCOTOXINS OR AFLATOXINS

IN YOUR HOME, OFFICE OR OTHER INDOOR ENVIRONMENT?

If your office, classroom, apartment, home, or the home you are considering buying or renting has evidence of water damage, water intrusion, or flooding, you should be concerned about mold.

IF YOU HAVE HAD WATER LEAKS FROM STORMS, SEWAGE BACK-UPS, BROKEN PIPES, FLOODING, HIGH HUMIDITY OR ANY OTHER WATER OR MOISTURE RELATED ISSUES, YOU MAY HAVE INDOOR MOLD, MYCOTOXIN OR AFLATOXIN ISSUES.

JUST BECAUSE YOU CANNOT SEE OR SMELL MOLD, IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT MOLD OR FUNGUS IS NOT THERE.

Most interior mold is a byproduct of water reacting with modern construction materials such as drywall paper, carpeting, wallpaper backings and particleboard.  Although the existence of the simple fungus has been documented since biblical days, modern structures, which are sealed to keep in heat and air conditioning, encourage the growth of mold.

Because mold and fungi can’t grow without a source of water – typically from slow-leaking pipes or other water intrusion – it’s usually simple to remove/repair the source and clean up the mold.  Mold is often a maintenance issue.  When you stop the water, you stop the potential for mold.

Some common causes of indoor mold growth are :::

  • Condensation

  • Roof leaks

  • Plumbing leaks

  • Overflow from tubs, sinks, or toilets

  • Firewood stored indoors

  • Improper humidifier use

  • Inadequate venting of kitchen and bath humidity

  • Improper venting of combustion appliances

  • Failure to vent clothes dryer exhaust outdoors

  • Line drying laundry indoors

Did You Know?

ALL molds reproduce by making "spores." Mold spores are microscopic and only become visible when individual spores accumulate.

According to the United States EPA, these microscopic particles continuously move through indoor and outdoor air.

When mold spores find moisture indoors, they may "begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive."

Did you know that mold only needs a few simple things to grow and multiply :

¾Moisture        ¾Organic Nutrients         ¾A suitable place to grow

Controlling excess moisture is the key to preventing and stopping indoor mold growth.

In nature, molds help break down dead materials & can be found growing on soil, foods, plant matter & other organic items.

Mold should not be permitted to grow and multiply indoors.

Ten Things You Should Know About Mold

Molds gradually destroy whatever they are growing on.

By purchasing either a condo or co-op, you still enjoy some tax relief and property appreciation, while someone else cuts the grass and takes care of the pool and grounds.   BUT, there's a price attached to it, both in dollars and your sense of independence.

If you have found out just how costly a co-op or a condominium can be to own, please tell us your story by clicking HERE.

MOLD PREVENTION TIP:

The basement is a good place to keep that de-humidifier active, even though the winter air is relatively dry. The de-humidifier will go a long way to help dry up that puddle, or keep the surface of walls that much drier.
